Guide Excerpt #7
Azeroth's Dwarves hail from the snowy Khaz Modan
region. They have staunch friends in their Gnomish
cousins; the races have become even closer since the
latter were driven from their techno-city,
Gnomeregan. Both are on excellent terms with the
Humans of Stormwind, the last bastion of that
species' civilization. Honorable and just, the Night
Elves are nonetheless hesitant to trust the 'lesser
races' within the faction known as the Alliance. The
Tauren are normally peaceful, nomadic creatures
devoted to the balance of nature. In the Horde, they
are aligned with the fierce Orcs, brought to Azeroth
unwillingly from their world, Draenor. The Trolls of
the Darkspear tribe joined this coalition after an
Orcish leader saved them from extermination.
Although there isn't goodwill in either direction,
these three are joined with the Undead in sharing a
common enemy, the Lich King.
Blizzard's World of Warcraft, which launched late
last year, affords us the opportunity to explore
Azeroth with characters from these eight playable
races. Each offers a selection of up to six classes
from an overall total of nine that includes Warrior,
Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Mage, Warlock, Shaman,
Priest and Druid. The gameworld includes two
continents made up of almost 40 regions and a
handful of large cities plus numerous other
locations such as smaller communities and dungeons.
Upon starting to find your way around, you'll
discover the gameplay incorporates a considerable
quest component, a wide assortment of enemies to
overcome, lots of different weapons, armor and other
items, and much more to learn. If you're looking for
help in such areas, two highly informative options
are our popular World of Warcraft Vault and
BradyGames' World of Warcraft Official Strategy
Guide.

Crafting & Professions, Part 3: Gatherer and
Secondary Skills
From BradyGames' World of Warcraft Official Strategy
Guide
Gatherer Professions
The skills of Mining, Skinning and Herbalism are
gathering skills. You won't be making anything, or
need to make anything, to gather. These vocations
supply other professions by providing resources
necessary for them to ply their trades.
Herbalism
Your first skill is Find Herbs. Drag this icon from
your ability book (P) into your hotkey bar, then hit
the corresponding number or click it to activate it.
Once you activate it you'll only need to refresh it
on death or after logging in.
While out adventuring, yellow dots may appear on
your mini map when any herbs are nearby, indicating
their location. If you mouse over the yellow dot on
the mini map, you can discover which type of herbs
are around.
When you're next to the plant, mouse over it to
check the required skill level necessary to harvest
it. Right-click on the plant to gather the herbs. It
takes a few seconds and, if you're successful, a
loot window opens with the herbs you found.
It's possible to get a few of the herbs from each
plant and there are times when a bonus herb is
included. (Swiftthistle is found on Mageroyal,
Bruiseweed, Briarthorn, etc.)
Mining
Mining ore is crucial to the economy and, possibly,
to another of your chosen professions. Copper, tin,
on up are available at the swing of a pick, but
jewels await the lucky. Find Minerals is the first
skill granted to miners. Use it to go out and about
to find your Copper. Drag the icon from your ability
book (P) into your hotkey bar. Once you activate it,
only death, logging, or choosing to hunt herbs
removes its effect. A yellow dot appears on your
mini map while you're out adventuring to indicate
that there's ore to be found!
