Tom
I was in Ratchet the other day when I saw something
strange running around off to one side of town.
There was a character whose name was written over
his head in yellow text. He had dashed around the
corner of the bank. As far as I know, there's
nothing back there. Curious, I headed in his
direction. As I rounded the corner and saw him, I
froze. As did he. He was a Night Elf. I'm a Troll.
We were on a PvP server.
I was reminded of the last time I had a party at my
house. The back door had been open all night because
people were going out on the back porch to smoke. At
some point during the evening, an uninvited guest
came inside. So in the early hours of the morning,
after the last person had left and I was carrying
empty beer bottles and glasses into the kitchen, my
new guest and I suddenly came to face-to-face with
each other.
There, on my kitchen counter, looking at me and
standing completely still, was a mouse. We both
stood stock still, wondering if we'd been seen even
though we were staring at each other, waiting to see
what the other creature's first move would be.
Eventually I sidled off to one side to try to herd
the mouse out the back door, at which point he
dashed under the oven and eluded me for about three
days before meeting a grisly end that I'd rather not
discuss.
So it was with me and this Night Elf. We both must
have been wondering if we'd been seen. We both
seemed to be waiting for the other's first move. And
I was wondering if I let him go, whether he'd be a
thorn in the Horde's side.
After all, I didn't know the first thing about PvP
back then. I'm still not sure I know anything about
it now. You apparently get no experience points, no
money, and no loot from PvP. Mark and Bruce tell me
all the stuff in the manual about honor has been
scrapped.
The Night Elf started slowly sidling off to one
side, behind some crates. I noted he was a level 18
rogue, whereas I was only a level 12 priest. For all
I know, he could have easily killed me. If he'd
attacked, I probably would have panicked and just
started slapping buttons and hollering 'WE'RE UDNER
ATTAKC!!!!!!" on the local defense channel, which is
something I've seen plenty of people do. As it is,
he just went his way and I just went my way. Since
he was kind enough not to kill me, I decided to
simply pretend I hadn't seen anything.

Tom, that Night Elf couldn't attack you in Ratchet.
It's not a contested area. He was flagged for PvP by
going there, but until you attack him to set your
own flag to PvP he can't do anything to you. You
should have given a shout out to your Horde brethren
to let them know an enemy combatant was lurking
about. Believe me, on a PvP server the players enjoy
PvP. They would have been all over him like
horseflies on a Tauren's caboose. You could have had
a little taste of blood, Tom.
Just to clarify: When you are in your own
non-contested zones, you cannot be attacked unless
you flip your PvP flag by attacking an enemy player
(or just flip it with /pvp).
When you go into contested zones like Booty Bay, you
are automatically flipped to PvP. The enemy can
attack you.
When you go into an enemy's non-contested areas you
are automatically flipped to PvP. You cannot attack
any enemies, however, until they flip their own PvP
flags by attacking you or someone else on the Horde
side.
These are the rules for the PvP servers anyway. For
the normal servers it's a bit different. Your PvP
flag is never flipped by going into an area. You
have to flip it manually with the /pvp command or
attack an enemy NPC to go into PvP mode. In other
words, on the normal servers PvP is always
consensual. ..
